The story begins on Tara's 18th born day; her and best friend Ben are out hunting trying to catch anything that moves for dinner back at their run down village of Rivercross. Everything has pretty much turned to dust after 'The Shift' hundreds of years ago and everyone lives in fear of the president and his army. Tara's world changes forever on this day as huge metal machines invade her village and kill everyone but her, as her Grada was quick enough to hide her. Just before he died he tells Tara to seek out Lily and she will get her answers but what on earth could he mean? Is Tara different in some way? The story then follows Tara on her travels to Littlepass and along the way she picks up some companions who help her along the journey. Will Tara make it and find her answers or will the president and his army get to them first?
This sort of dystopian read is normally my cup of tea but for some reason i just couldn't click with it. The story was good and the world was definitely built up enough to continue in the series; the characters were all likeable but I just didn't get on with it personally. I found the story to be a little slow paced for my liking but towards the last third of the book it did speed up and we are left with a cliff hanger to the sequel. If you are a fan of dystopian and things like the hunger games I'd recommend trying this as you might enjoy it :)
